This is Mamoune. She works in the packing department when there is enough work to call her in. Recently she has been having trouble with her eyes and needs to see a doctor. Her need for an exam and medication (around $75) is out of her reach right now. Papillon Empowerment exists to step in as a safety net for emergency and out of reach situations. Hey friends! Papillon Empowerment 501(c)3 will be doing a toy drive this year so that our artisans can give their children something special for Christmas! (Much needed joy for such a hard year)

She was standing in my kitchen tonight and telling me her story. Not too long after I snapped this picture, the tears started falling. Last week she had asked me if she and her sister Phanise (one of our potters) ans their two little sisters + their 5 daughters between the two of them could all sleep at the artisan center.
My business brain told them no. It’s not for that kind of thing. If you stay, everyone would want to stay and then all the toilets would get broken.
What I didn’t fully realize was that armed gang members had taken over her neighborhood. The house she has worked to build for going on seven years now is not safe. The gang members were entering homes all last week, stealing and taking over houses and raping women. Her tribe is 9 girls strong and you can only imagine the terror as she fled home from work last week not knowing if her daughters were ok. Today, she made the choice to send all the girls away into the country side with extended family until she can figure out what to do. She needs to keep working but has nowhere to be (she’s staying with me for a few days). I want to tell her that we are going to take care of her and her children. I want to ease the trauma that she has experienced this week. A small two room house would be about $1500 for a year. In Haiti, you have to pay the whole year in advance to move in. That’s far beyond her reach on her own.

My hope is that we can get her into a safe place so she can keep working AND have her children with her. “Many hands make the load light” and she needs a few hands to help ease her burden right now.

She was living right in the middle of the “hot z

She was living right in the middle of the “hot zone” with bullets flying daily as the predominant gang in the area continues to battle the police, other gangs, and also continue the rampage of kidnapping. All she wanted was somewhere safe to live with her two small boys but didn’t have the money to leave her current rental situation and pay the upfront costs of a years rent in advance. Having worked at Papillon for ten years, she applied for emergency assistance and through papillonempowerment.org we were able to rent her a small apartment with plumbing and a small kitchen- a luxury for many in Haiti. ❤️ If you would like to help out with situations like this, please go to papillonempowerment.org and see how you can help too!

About 8 years ago she was homeless with a little baby in her arms and thought we were an orphanage where she could leave her child. What she was offered instead was a little job making artisan goods. Today she is still working and is now one of our main ceramicists. We are so thankful that she has gotten to keep her baby, raise her well and be a mother to her daughter! And look how beautiful they both are! Feeling so much gratitude today. ❤️

She used to not have a voice. She was a victim of domestic abuse with no way out and no hope for something better for herself. A job gave her a voice. It gave her the ability to stand up and say no. She lives in peace because of her ability to work to provide for her children. This is just one story. We are creating sustainable jobs opportunities in Haiti to preserve and promote the family as a whole and stand beside the vulnerable. #orphanprevention
